Wyoming lawmaker proposes bill to make it a law that all blood donations from COVID-vaccinated Americans need to be labeled so recipients can reject it

  • State Rep. Sarah Penn sponsored a bill for the next legislative session
  • There are currently several deferral periods for donating blood after the COVID-19 vaccination

A Wyoming state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would require all blood donations from people vaccinated with COVID to be labeled as such.

State Rep. Sarah Penn has sponsored a bill that would make it mandatory to specifically label all blood from vaccinated donors — and allow those who choose to do so to refuse it in non-emergency situations, as reported by Cowboy stands daily.

“For a variety of reasons, many people have deliberately sought to keep mRNA therapies out of their bodies, even to the point that some have lost their livelihoods,” Penn told Cowboy State Daily. “Their concerns are valid.”

It comes after a wave of skeptical, unvaccinated Americans refusing life-saving blood transfusions from vaccinated donors.

They fear the blood of someone who has received a COVID-19 vaccine has been ‘contaminated’ in some way, raising concerns it is linked to strokes and blood cuts, among other things.

There is no evidence that the vaccine leads to health problems, despite a very small percentage of documented side effects.

But because of these fears, which are based on misinformation, some anti-vaxxers have asked doctors to give them blood from an unvaccinated person.

Currently, there are different deferral periods for donating blood after the COVID-19 vaccination, ranging from no deferral at all to up to 28 days, depending on the health organizations.

With 70 percent of the U.S. population vaccinated, the bill would make it more difficult for Wyoming residents to access blood donations.

Although the Red Cross said last month it is facing a blood shortage emergency, the Red Cross does not collect blood in Wyoming so its supply is not affected.

Additionally, a bill from Penn, known as House Bill 115, is unlikely to pass the U.S. House of Representatives because of concerns about medical privacy and the extra work it would mean for health care providers.

Still, she defended the bill, telling Cowboy State Daily, “It simply allows for better monitoring, and it gives people some choice when it comes to non-emergency transfusions.

“First, do no harm.”
