Wyndham Clark overcame the rapid loss of his lead overnight to claim his first PGA Tour title in the Wells Fargo Championship.
Clark’s two-shot lead was wiped out in the first three holes and the 29-year-old American found himself a shot behind playing partner Xander Schauffele after seven holes of the final round at Quail Hollow.
Clark reacted superbly to birdie five of the next eight, however, and with Schauffele stumbling around the turn, victory became something of a formality.
A closing 68 gave Clark a winning total of 19 under par and a four-shot victory over Schauffele, with England’s Tyrrell Hatton and America’s Harris English three strokes further back in third.
Tommy Fleetwood and former world number one Adam Scott tied for fifth place at 11 under.

“Gosh, sorry, I’m a little confused,” Clark told CBS after joining the likes of Anthony Kim, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Max Homa to make the Wells Fargo Championship their first PGA Tour title. to make.

“I didn’t start great, I was a bit shaky and I think I may have folded over the years. This time I just stayed patient and persevered and got hot in the back.β

Schauffele was left to costly dropped shots on the ninth and eleventh, telling reporters:
“If you’re trying to win on Sunday you have to turn the screws down and put some pressure on the guys in the lead and I didn’t do that.
βI probably had to shoot under seven again today to tie him or win by one difference.
βI think if I could have put a little bit of pressure through that mid-section where I started leaking oil, it probably would have looked a little different.
‘I’m playing very solid again and unfortunately had a flat Sunday.’
