Former Portsmouth defender Sonny Bradley was on target against his former club as League One Wycombe pulled off an upset in the third round of the FA Cup as they beat their Championship opponents 2-0 thanks to two first-half goals at Adams Park.

Despite being separated by a division, there are only five places between the two clubs in the English football pyramid as Brandon Hanlan and former Pompey man Bradley were on target to see the Chairboys knock out the 2008 winners with ease.

The visitors’ first big chance of the first half came when Paddy Lane’s fierce shot was saved by Shamal George, before a goal soon followed when Matt Ritchie and Freddie Potts’ efforts were blocked off the line.

This was within the first two minutes.

Less than 60 seconds later, Wycombe almost took the lead when Berylyl Lubala’s effort was toe-poked away by Jordan Archer.

However, it didn’t take long for the Chairboys to take the lead. Brilliant play down the left from Gideon Kodua saw him beat two players and assist Hanlan for a first finish after 17 minutes.

It was only his second goal of the season and his first against Portsmouth in his career, with Wanderers doubling their lead ten minutes later thanks to on-loan Derby defender Bradley.

Luke Leahy’s brilliant free-kick was fired into the penalty area and there was the ex-Pompey man heading in his first goal for the club just days after signing for the Rams.

Bradley spent the 2013/14 season with the Blues, making 38 appearances and scoring once.

The hosts could have extended their lead just before half-time when Garath McCleary’s curling attempt went just wide, while Leahy also went close.

A negative point for Wycombe was that goalkeeper George was taken off the field injured just seven minutes into the match. He went down not long after an earlier save and was replaced by Nathan Bishop.

In the second period, Portsmouth had a lot of ball possession, but rarely threatened the home goal.

Several crosses were comfortably collected for Chairboy’s shot stopper, while Christian Saydee went close.

But the night belonged to Wycombe as they advanced to the fifth round for the first time since 2021.
