Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground had to be evacuated as diners enjoyed a Father’s Day meal after rainwater began pouring through the roof.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms hit the Welsh town on Sunday, flooding a number of roads in the area and rendering them impassable.

The storms caused structural damage to the Macron Grandstand at the Racecourse and caused a nasty surprise for people dining in the 1864 Suite for the £24.95 per head meal.

The Welsh club, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have just won promotion to the Football League from non-league football.

Footage posted on social media showed water coming through the ceiling as guests exited the building.

a club statement read: ‘Wrexham AFC can confirm the 1864 Suite was evacuated during the third meeting of today’s Father’s Day meals at the Racecourse Ground.

“In the aftermath of heavy rains that hit the region in the late afternoon, structural damage led to a major leak in the Macron Stand reception area.

“All guests have been evacuated from the Suite for safety reasons and fire and rescue services have been contacted. Everyone who was in the stands at the time was successfully evacuated.

All guests who took part in the third meeting will be contacted by the club and we share their disappointment that – after two successful meetings – circumstances beyond our control disrupted plans for the evening.

“We will assess the situation at the Macron stand to ensure we can get everything up and running again as soon as possible.”

The three course meal consisted of Welsh roast beef, homemade cheese and onion pie and Eton strawberry mess.

A spokesman for the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they had been called to 13 reports of flash flooding in the Wrexham area early Sunday evening.

Earlier this month, Wrexham announced that US carrier United would become their new shirt sponsor for the upcoming League Two season.

They won the National League title with 111 points and 116 goals after an epic battle with Notts County, who were also promoted after the play-offs.

It means they will play in the EFL for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

They were boosted last week by former England goalkeeper Ben Foster, 40, who agreed a new one-year contract.

Foster appeared for the final eight games of their National League promotion campaign, saving a vital penalty in a victory over Notts County.
