Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has made a new bid to convince Gareth Bale to retire.

Wales’ Hollywood owners McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have had incredible success at Wrexham since securing full ownership in 2021.

The actors have invested heavily in the newly promoted League One team and could be bracing themselves for even more if they can convince former Real Madrid and Tottenham winger Bale to join next season.

McElhenney failed in his bid to sign Bale last year but did not give up as he once again urged the Welshman to come out of retirement for ‘one last magical season’ in his homeland.

‘Gareth Bale is technically still available. I don’t know, I made a plea last year and I’m going to tell Gareth that the offer is still on the table,” McElhenney said.

‘We leave you free to play golf whenever you want. As long as you come to training once or twice a week, we can figure out how to get you on the field for 10 minutes.

“And the golf courses — Wales is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.”

Bale retired from professional football in January 2023 after a decision he described as ‘the toughest of his career’ as he hung up his boots after scoring more than 200 career goals, including a record 41 for Wales.

The 34-year-old has repeatedly stressed that he will not be tempted to retire, despite the continued charm offensive from McElhenney and Reynolds.

Asked if he misses the sport at last year’s FEVO Sport Industry Awards, Bale said: ‘No, I enjoy my free time. I started at a young age and felt the time was right.’

When asked about the Wrexham speculation and whether he would join the club, he added: ‘No, I don’t think so, I was more looking for a free round of golf from Rob!’.

Wrexham will play in League One next season after gaining promotion for the third time in a row by finishing second in League Two.

McElhenney has his sights set on another promotion next season, he recently said S4C: ‘I mean, not that it wasn’t real before, but now it’s really becoming real.

‘League One is a very competitive division. There are so many great clubs who have come into League One from the Championship and it will be a lot tougher than last year.

‘But I was just with Phil [Parkinson] and then just with the guys in Vegas, and they seem to think we have a chance to be back on top.”
