Legendary wrestler Sting has announced his final retirement from the sport after setting a date to end his career.

The AEW star took to the ring in Texas on Wednesday night, where he detailed his plans to retire in front of an emotional crowd that encouraged him to keep going.

Despite previously retiring in 2016 when he was a star on the WWE roster, Sting confirmed he will make his final appearance in the sport next year.

The wrestler, whose real name is Steve Borden, has been involved in the sport professionally since 1985 when he made his television debut alongside The Ultimate Warrior on the Continental Wrestling Association.

Originally identifying as Flash, Borden quickly became a household name, appearing in the ring for Universal Wrestling Federation, World Championship Wrestling, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and WWE before eventually joining AEW in 2020.

The 64-year-old revealed his plans to retire from wrestling at AEW Dynamite Wednesday, explaining that his final professional appearance would come at AEW Revolution next year.

“We used to wonder why these guys want to come back year after year, decade after decade, what else do they have to prove? I have to tell you: here I am, all these years later. I understand why they persisted,” Sting said.

“I know some of you are thinking “he’s already retired once”, yes I said the word retired, but I have to tell you that the 2015 retirement didn’t sit well with me.

“My very first match with AEW was Revoluton 2021 and my very last match will be Revolution 2024.

“One important thing you need to know is that the only thing you know for sure about Sting is that my retirement at Revolution 2024 is certain,” he finished.

No date has yet been set for next year’s event, but it is traditionally held in March.
