- Jamie Redknapp said club need to replace Wout Weghorst with ‘a superior striker’
Jamie Redknapp insisted that Wout Weghorst is “not good enough” for Manchester United after Newcastle beat him 2-0 on Sunday.
The Magpies scored twice in the second half through Joe Willock and Callum Wilson, but dominated the game when United registered just one shot on target.
It was an especially damaging result for the Red Devils as Newcastle have now passed them into third place.
Tottenham can push United to fifth with a draw against Everton on Monday, although they will have played two more games.
Redknapp felt that Weghorst, who has started every game for Erik ten Hag since he joined in January, was particularly bad on Sunday.
Jamie Redknapp said Wout Weghorst ‘isn’t good enough’ after Man United’s loss to Newcastle
Erik ten Hag’s side slid to fourth place after the result, and will fall out of the Champions League places if Tottenham draw with Everton on Monday.
He told Sky Sports: ‘What those performances there show [throughout the season] and what we have seen today is that they are very short, they need players.
‘I don’t want to jump to number 9, Weghorst, a nightmare. But he is not good enough. If Man United want to compete to win titles, they need to go and find a top striker. They have needed one for a long time along with Rashford.
United offered very little threat in the drive at St James’ Park and registered just one shot on goal, but Redknapp admitted they were not at full strength.
“Today in the center of the field you have to remember that they don’t have Casemiro and [Christian] Eriksen today,’ he added, ‘two really important players because you are not afraid of that Manchester United midfield today.
‘You’re not afraid to play against [Marcel] Sabitzer or [Scott] McTominay at this time. you know bruno [Fernandes] when he’s having a good day he’s amazing and when he’s having a bad day he’s throwing his arms up in the air, that’s not good enough and that doesn’t set the right example.’
Despite the gloom currently surrounding Old Trafford, the Red Devils could still be on course for an unlikely treble this season.
With a trophy already in the bag, they have reached the Europa League quarter-finals and will face Sevilla in the quarter-finals next week, while also advancing to the FA Cup semi-finals.
The real concern is the form of the league. United have gone seven weeks without scoring a Premier League goal and while they could still hold on to fourth place, the teams around them are overtaking them.
Redknapp felt that ten Hag will need to invest this summer regardless of how the rest of the season goes.
Redknapp argued that Ten Hag need to strengthen this summer no matter what their trophy case looks like, continuing: ‘Manchester United will have to work hard in terms of recruiting in the next window if they are to compete.
‘I think it is [Ten Hag’s] In a way, looking at it and it’s been papering over the cracks for a while and if you carry on to the end of the season and you’ve won a trophy and get into the top four, everyone thinks it’s all great.
They are short, need help. He needs some players to come in because they’re not going to be that far. We already know that he is a top coach because he has already changed a lot of things at the club.’
The Red Devils are next in action when they take on Brentford on Wednesday, a game that is not without its traumas after United lost 4-0 to the Bees in ten Hag’s second game in charge, before finishing six. busy days with a game against Everton on Saturday. .
