Besiktas has confirmed that it has parted ways with striker Wout Weghorst ahead of his possible move to Manchester United.
A club statement said: “The temporary transfer agreement with our professional football player Wout Weghorst and his club has been terminated by mutual agreement with the player and his club.”
“Due to Burnley FC’s early termination of contract, a £2.5m termination fee will be paid to our company.”
Wout Weghorst’s loan deal at Besiktas canceled as move to Manchester United nears
United were in a race against time to cross the line, after agreeing to pay the £2.5m fee to shorten his loan spell at the Turkish side so they could bring him on for the rest of the season.
Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag has admitted they were unable to finalize the deal in time for the striker to feature in this weekend’s Manchester derby but insisted the deal was “close” to completion.
The 30-year-old flew by private plane from Istanbul to Manchester on Thursday to complete his medical.
It means he could make his debut when United travel to Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
The former Wolfsburg and AZ Alkmaar striker scored nine goals in 18 appearances for Besiktas, and also scored twice for the Netherlands against Argentina in the World Cup quarterfinals last month.
