Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has responded to his critics, stating that he is “doing a good job for the team”.

The Dutch striker joined Erik ten Hag’s team on loan from Burnley in January after a successful first-half season loan spell at Besiktas, where he scored nine goals in 18 games, interrupted.

Since then, he has been a key part of a rejuvenated United under his compatriot’s stewardship, starting 18 of the 18 games he has been available for in all competitions.

However, he has only scored two goals and is yet to score in eight Premier League games, leading to criticism that he is not good enough for the club.

However, Weghorst has defended himself against his detractors, stating that the fact that Ten Hag has made him a regular member of his starting XI is evidence that he is more than capable of playing for United.

Wout Weghorst has hit back at critics by arguing that he is not good enough for Manchester United.

The Dutch striker has been a key member of Erik ten Hag’s team since he arrived at Old Trafford.

“There are many games and it shows the confidence in me,” said the giant striker. He also shows that I’m doing a good job for the team.

‘That was what I wanted when I came here: to contribute and try to help the club succeed in winning trophies. Now we have one.

He added: ‘We have two more (trophies) to go with the Europa League and the FA Cup, and we want to go as high as possible in the table and definitely the top four for the Champions League.

‘So it shows me that I’m being a part of this.’

Weghorst supporters have praised him for his contribution to the team as a whole, with the striker often leading the United press from the front and creating space for other attackers such as Marcus Rashford.

But his detractors, including Scholes, had used this off-the-ball work as a stick to hit him with.

Scholes recently told Premier League Productions: ‘Weghorst is in the team to be a defender, really.

“You are talking about a Manchester United No 10 or a center forward, he is in the team to be defensive.

However, Weghorst is yet to score in the Premier League and has just two goals in 18 starts.

His critics include Paul Scholes, with the United legend insisting that Weghorst is “not good enough”.

“He’s the one who runs and rats and everyone likes to play him because he does that.

“But also quality-wise, you have to have a certain level of quality to play at Man United…it’s not there.”

Weghorst is currently on international duty with the Netherlands, with Ronald Koeman’s side facing Euro 2024 qualifying matches against France and Gibraltar over the next week.

He will then return to Old Trafford and the Red Devils will return to action with a decisive clash against Newcastle on April 2.
