Would you serve McDonald’s on your big day? Wedding planner insists it’s ‘absolutely disgusting’ to give guests fast food – but GMB viewers are divided
A bride munching on a Big Mac is not what comes to mind when you imagine a traditional wedding, and a furious debate has broken out on GMB over whether it is ever acceptable to serve fast food.
Raj Somaiya, one of Britain’s best-known wedding planners, called the idea “absolutely disgusting” and said it would be like “having the heart ripped out of a wedding.”
Meanwhile, journalist and writer Floral Gill, who also appeared on the breakfast show, said ‘you should eat as much as you want on your big day’.
Following the results of a YouGov poll, which claimed that one in five Britons would rather eat McDonald’s or KFC at a wedding reception, GMB asked viewers on wedding party.
The poll received almost 4,500 votes, with the majority (57 percent) saying takeaway meals should not be served on such a special occasion.
Raj, judge on BBC2’s Ultimate Wedding Planner, explained that there is specific etiquette to follow, and a wedding breakfast should be a sumptuous three-course meal that reflects the ceremony.
“There is a time and a place for nuggets,” he said.
‘You have a beautiful wedding, you go to church to get married, and then you have this beautiful wedding breakfast, a two-hour extravaganza with speeches, toasts, cake cuttings, and then you have your disco.
‘If you have your wedding breakfast, it should be a three-course meal. It is beautiful and elegant and adds atmosphere to the wedding.’
Pointing to a plate of McDonald’s food, he added: “That’s not right.”
Flora disagreed and insisted that anything goes at a wedding. She said, “If you like nuggets, if you like burgers, if you like pizza, then that’s what you gotta have.”
Good Morning Britain asked viewers on Twitter if they thought a takeaway was acceptable for wedding announcements, but 57% said it was unacceptable
Professional planner Raj Somaiya called serving McDonald’s at a wedding reception ‘absolutely disgusting’ during a heated argument
Raj claimed that having takeaway food would be like ‘taking the heart out of a wedding’, during a chat with journalist Flora Gill
‘You know what tastes good cooked in bulk? Fast food,” she continued.
‘Food is not the heart of a wedding, the people are the heart of a wedding.’
Several viewers agreed with Flora, with one describing her own wedding breakfast at a Toby Carvery as ‘brilliant’.
Meanwhile, another explained how her local fish and chip shop delivered food in takeaway boxes and ‘everyone loved it’.
It seems that several celebrities are also willing to serve fast food on their wedding day. Singer Olly Murs recently shared photos from his lavish summer wedding to Amelia Tank, where they were pictured enjoying chicken nuggets from a McDonald’s truck.
While Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz provided guests with cheeseburgers, fries and chicken nuggets from a Wendy’s food truck at their £3 million wedding after-party.
Raj later admitted that it would be better to transport guests directly to McDonald’s because at least the food would be fresh.
