An Australian mother has baffled the internet with a seemingly innocent photo of her 14-year-old daughter’s bedroom after she received a “makeover” from Bunnings Warehouse.

The woman, who lives in South Australia, posted on Facebook on Monday photos of the finished product, showing her daughter’s bed, desk and storage units.

“Another fortune spent on Bunnings, hopefully finally getting Miss 14’s room done up for her birthday,” he wrote. ‘The paint, buckets and desk are all by Bunnings.

“She has two sets of cubes, one behind the other that equals 16 cubes where it was wasted under the bed space.”

While she was obviously proud of the design, some commenters took to pointing out the safety risks involved in placing the girl’s mattress in stackable cubes.

‘I don’t want to be that person, but that bed isn’t safe. In fact, they have weight liners on those shelves and now I can tell you that the mattress alone would cover the weight limit,” wrote one woman.

“I would get a normal single bed and add drawers under the bed to store things”

But the mother replied: ‘It has a full wooden frame built in and attached…the carriers are on the walls, we wouldn’t risk being sure! Without the cubes there, the bed would still be safe.

Another woman intervened to defend her, but filed an additional complaint.

The desk photo didn't get as many comments as the bed.

‘My husband and I can sit on those cubes just fine. Usually they convert to bench seats and the weight is distributed between two units here, so it’s even stronger,” he said.

“The main concern would be mold and mildew on the mattress because it doesn’t have ventilation underneath.”

But the original poster also had an answer for that supposed error.

“Actually, there’s about 10 inches along the long side of the bed that’s open, and the head end is open where the window is.” The mattress is also not flush with the cubes, there would be a good 4-5cm between the cubes and the bed base slats so I hope that’s enough,” she replied.

But that didn’t stop more commenters from pointing out that height may be an issue.

That bed doesn’t look safe at all. If it rolls to the right on the edge, won’t it tip the entire mattress over? Said a woman.

“I hope she doesn’t fall out of bed in the middle of the night,” said another.

A third added: ‘Great idea, but is it okay to use these cube shelves like this? Will they resist?

Bunnings sells a number of cube storage solutions that can be placed upright or flat to suit the needs of your space.
