World’s best-paid female footballers revealed as Barcelona star sets new record… but does Sam Kerr make the cut?

  • Spanish outlet AS has revealed the highest paid female footballers in the world
  • Matildas and Chelsea star Sam Kerr is in the top three
  • A Barcelona star has taken the top spot with a salary of around €1 million per season

The highest paid female footballer has been revealed after a summer of transfers and contract extensions saw huge changes in the rankings.

Spanish outlet ALS has published the updated standings, which only take into account the salaries players receive from their clubs and exclude sponsorship deals and payments to the national team.

It’s no surprise that Chelsea and Matildas superstar Sam Kerr is now in the running for top spot after the 30-year-old signed a lucrative new contract with the English club during the off-season.

But Kerr is not in first place as the Australian is beaten by a Barcelona star at the peak of her powers.

That’s right, reigning Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati is the highest paid female soccer player in the world after signing a new contract with the Spanish powerhouse on Monday.

According to AS, the 26-year-old will earn around €1 million per season, with Barcelona keen to fend off Chelsea’s interest after the Blues reportedly considered activating her €3 million buyout fee.

In addition to her commanding club salary, Bonmati also has endorsements from Adidas, Nissan and Alpro. Her contract with Barcelona expires in 2028.

Club and national teammate Alexia Putellas is just below Bonmati in the rankings. The 30-year-old extended her contract with Barcelona in May and earns around €700,000 a year, a fair reward for having won the Ballon d’Or twice.

Widely regarded as one of the most recognisable faces in women’s football, Putellas has struggled to find the form that saw her crowned No. 1 on the planet due to a long-term injury, but she remains vital to Barça’s plans.

Matildas captain Kerr settles for third in the table after extending her contract at Stamford Bridge for a whopping £470,000-a-season.

Norwegian football legend Ada Hegerberg is also among the highest paid stars

It has been a frustrating 12 months for Kerr, who was unable to lead the Matildas to the World Cup final due to a knee injury that kept her out for a period. However, Chelsea have shown their loyalty to Kerr by offering her improved terms in the summer.

Only one Lioness is in AS’s top 10: Keira Walsh, who reportedly earns €457,000 a year after her record transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona last summer.

The remaining spaces are: Ada Hegerberg (€398,000), Marta (€386,000), Wendie Renard (€357,000), Christine Sinclair (€345,000) and Trinity Rodman (€256,000).

The salaries of female players are of course a lot lower than their male counterparts. Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly earns £3.4 million a week at Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.
