Soccer reporter Grant Wahl died of complications from an undetected heart problem while covering the World Cup in Qatar, his widow has revealed, and not as a result of foul play, as many, including his brother, suspected.

Dr. Céline Gounder, Wahl’s wife, told CBS Wednesday morning that her husband died of a “ruptured aortic aneurysm.”

“And it’s just one of these things that had probably been brewing for years, and for whatever reason it happened at this time,” Gounder said.

“And it’s just one of these things that had probably been brewing for years, and for whatever reason it happened at this time,” Gounder said.

Eric Wahl, Grant’s brother, earlier claimed on social media that Grant was ‘killed’ for wearing a rainbow ‘pride’ jersey in an earlier game in the tournament in violation of Qatar’s anti-gay laws. He has since acknowledged that his brother did not die because of foul play and has admitted that he regrets making that claim.

Speaking to CBS, Gounder attributed his brother-in-law’s misstatements to grief.

There was speculation that Wahl was not properly cared for by my emergency staff on hand at the match in Doha. Others echoed ongoing conspiracy theories by speculating that Wahl fell victim to the COVID-19 vaccine.

But speaking to CBS and writing on Wahl’s Substack page, Gounder has shot those theories down.

“Grant died of a ruptured, undetected, slow-growing ascending aortic aneurysm with hemopericardium,” he wrote. The chest pressure that he experienced shortly before his death may have represented the initial symptoms. No amount of CPR or shocks would have saved him. His death was not related to COVID. His death was not related to vaccination status. There was nothing nefarious in his death.
