World Cup Confidential: Cristiano Ronaldo being benched by Portugal is ‘point of no return’

Sending Portugal to bench Cristiano Ronaldo would be ‘the point of no return’ for his international career just as it was for his time at Man United… it just won’t be a substitute for shock – Sportsmail’s Martin Samuel tells him to WORLD CUP CONFIDENTIAL

Portugal take on Switzerland in the World Cup round of 16 on Tuesday night and it is no surprise that the preparation was dominated by one man.

Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t seem overly impressed by being replaced early during their loss to South Korea and has created a headache for manager Fernando Santos.

In fact, Santos did not say definitively that Ronaldo would start against Switzerland and many fans believe that he should be benched.

sports mail Martin Samuel believes it would be the “point of no return” for Ronaldo’s international career if that happened, parallel to recent events at Manchester United.

  • Sami Mokbel on why England players want Gareth Southgate to carry on after the tournament even if they go to France.
  • Martin Samuel arguing that this will be Southgate’s last tournament no matter what.
  • Kathryn Batte on why Brazil dancing after each of their goals against South Korea was not disrespectful.
