Danny Welbeck’s exile in England is over with the Brighton forward, reportedly one of 55 names who were part of Gareth Southgate’s preliminary World Cup celebration.

According to the athleticthe Brighton and Hove Albion striker was named in the long list Gareth Southgate had to submit to FIFA.

Welbeck has capitulated 42 times for his country and has scored 16 goals, but has not been for the Three Lions since a friendly 1-0 win over Switzerland on 11 September 2018 at King Power Stadium.

Brighton is having a great season in the Premier League but Welbeck, 31, has yet to score in 11 appearances for the Seagulls this season.

Eberechi Eze, James Maddison and Callum Wilson are also among the outsiders still in the running to be selected in England’s World Cup squad.

Gareth Southgate will pick his 26-man side for Qatar next Thursday, but not too many surprises are expected, although the injuries to Kyle Walker and Reece James have raised questions about the makeup of England’s defensive options.

The England manager’s final roster will be removed from an original list of 55 names submitted to FIFA last month.

And Sports post understands that Eagles forward Eze, Leicester forward Maddison and Newcastle striker Wilson are among the names chosen in Southgate’s first long list of players – with Brighton’s Lewis Dunk also under consideration.

Given the fierce competition for places in Southgate’s squad, it would be a surprise if any of the three make the final roster next week.

But the trio still have a chance of making a roster that is scheduled to fly to Qatar on November 15, six days before their tournament opener against Iran.

Of the above three, Wilson may have the best chance of shorting the squad in real firepower with Southgate.

Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze is another name still in contention for the World Cup

However, Marcus Rashford’s form at Manchester United could limit Wilson’s chances.

Southgate is a huge fan of Rashford and hoped the attacker would return in time for the World Cup. The United striker, under Erik ten Hag, is approaching his best form and is now lining up for a recall from Qatar.

Joe Gomez and Ben White are among the defenders hoping to take advantage of the potential absence of Walker and James, while Brighton forward Danny Welbeck could be a shock candidate to also make the final roster, as reported by the athletic.
