Wordle offers a fun challenge today that straddles the line between too easy and too hard – though you might lean towards the latter if you don’t choose the best Wordle starting word.
In fact, there are a number of complicating factors in today’s game, so if you don’t play carefully, you risk losing your streak. But I can make sure that doesn’t happen.
I am a Wordle addict who has been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Wordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my hints and directions for Wordle #587.

Wordle today (game #587) – hint #1 – Vowels
- Wordle has today a vowel*
This is relatively unusual for Wordle – the game averages 1.75 vowels out of 2,309 answers.
The last game with only one vowel was #581 on Saturday: BLURB.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is also sometimes counted as a vowel).
Wordle today (game #587) – hint #2 – first letter
- The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is W.
W is the 13th most common initial letter in Wordle, with 82 solutions beginning with this letter.
You’d have to go all the way back to Wordle #561, on Sunday, January 1, for the last time we had an answer that started with a W – in which case the solution was WHINE.
Wordle today (game #587) – hint #3 – repeated letters
- There is a repeated letter in Wordle today.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. That’s about 15%, which means you get one every 6-7 games.
Coincidentally, we last had one yesterday, in game #586 (BEEFY).

Wordle today (game #587) – the answer
Wordle was a tricky one today in theory, with an unusual W at the start and a double R in the middle.
WordleBot rated it with an average of 4.3, which is higher than the standard 4 that most games even top out at. I managed 4/6 myself, so slightly below average, despite a bad start that left me with 77 possible answers after my initial guess of CRATE.
Since no vowels were discovered on my opening guess, I wanted to play a few more on my second and went with ROUND. This turned out to be quite fortunate, giving me a green O in position #2 and excluding the R as a starting letter.
WordleBot said I now only had 7 possible solutions left, although I didn’t know that at the time (you can’t use WordleBot until the game is over). However, I saw that there weren’t many options and only came up with 4: WORRY, SORRY, LORRY and PORKY. The ones I missed were FORGO, MORPH and WORMY.
All of my options ended in a Y and three had a double R before that, so I decided to go down that path and then played SORRY. I was wrong, but WORRY seemed a much more likely answer than the very British LORRY, and so it proved when all five letters turned green.

Wordle yesterday (game #586) – hints
In another time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can also give you some hints for Wordle #586.

- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was B.
- There was a repeated letter in yesterday’s Wordle.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer means heavily built.
Wordle yesterday (game #586) – the answer
Wordle #586 was quite tricky, with WordleBot claiming that most people would have to guess 4.6 times to solve it. That’s really high: anything above 4 is harder than usual, and once you get past 4.5, you’re entering some really tough terrain.
There are a number of reasons why it may have proved difficult. For starters, it has an F in fourth position, something that only appears in 35 of Wordle’s 2,309 games. The double E in the middle isn’t all that unusual – 59 games have an EE somewhere – but it still makes the word harder to guess.
Moreover, BEEFY, as a word itself, is not that common; it’s definitely on the jargon side of things.
Fortunately, I was very lucky on my second guess after my opening crate left me with just a single yellow E.
My second word in these situations is BLEND and it came out trump, giving me a green B and a green E and leaving only one possible solution. Lucky me!

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page, you almost certainly know what Wordle is and have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you haven’t played it, you must have heard about it by now, because it’s the viral wordplay phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game on our What’s Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher, here’s the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word every day. You get six guesses, each time revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the correct place, it will turn green. If it’s in the answer, but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all, it’ll be greyed out. Simple, huh?
It is played online through the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is completely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone every day, meaning you’re up against the rest of the world, rather than just yourself or the game. The puzzle will then reset to your local time at midnight every day, giving you a new challenge and a chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle Rules?
Wordle’s rules are pretty simple, but with a few curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and are in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but are in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer will be greyed out.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear multiple times. So if your guess contains two of one letter, they could both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. For example, you cannot guess ABCDE.
7. You do not need to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you are playing in hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your time zone.
10. All answers come from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle accepts a larger number of words as guesses – about 10,000. For example, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It certainly won’t work (see point 4 above), but Wordle accepts it as a guess.
