Woolworths staff, shoppers and security have struggled to hold off an unruly customer who launches a tirade of abuse at them as shocked passers-by look on.
An altercation with a member of staff appeared to have sparked the incident on Saturday afternoon inside a Woolworths in the Hibiscus shopping center in the Darwin suburb of Leanyer.
Footage of the confrontation published by the Mango Inquirer shows the woman lunging at staff members before being restrained by a fellow shopper.
She was then escorted out of the store by security.
Footage filmed by a shopper returning her cart to the store shows the woman being held back by a store supervisor as she insults another worker.
A shopper is held back by a Woolworths store supervisor as she launches an abusive tirade at a member of staff on Saturday afternoon.
‘Don’t attack my staff!’ the store supervisor can be heard saying.
The woman manages to break free of the supervisor’s grasp and pounces on the worker before a shopper intervenes at a nearby checkout, holding her in a tight bear hug.
‘Get off me, gronk,’ the woman can be heard yelling at the man.
Security guards quickly arrive on the scene and escort the apparently recurring offender out of the store.
“You do this every time,” the store supervisor can be heard yelling at the woman as she leaves.
Woolworths confirmed that police have been contacted about the incident and they plan to bar the woman from the store.
“There is no place for this type of abusive behavior anywhere in our community,” a spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
“Our team members do the best they can to help customers and deserve to be treated with respect at work.”
‘Woolworths offers ongoing support and advice to all members of staff.’
A member of the public finally steps in and pins the woman in a tight bear hug.
Many viewers who saw the viral video of the angry customer came to the defense of the staff and the customer who restrained her.
“The guy who gives you the bear hug is the true MVP,” one user commented.
Dammit!!! Don’t show your crazy on Woolies,’ wrote another.
However, others questioned the security involvement in the incident.
‘The security guard needs to be retired or properly trained. There is no need for the staff and the public to deal with this,’ commented one.
