A savvy shopper who slashed hundreds of dollars off his grocery bill at a drive-thru checkout has divided the internet.

The Woolworths customer spent $349.05 on 31 items, but after scanning her Everyday Rewards card and clicking a button, the final bill was just $114.70, nearly a third of the original total.

The man was delighted with the impressive $235 savings and couldn’t wait to share images of his hack on TikTok using the hashtags #gifts, #cheap and #savings.

A closer look at the screen reveals that most of the savings came from taking advantage of the supermarket’s free plates and glasses promotion.

Everyday Rewards members have accumulated points toward free Villeroy & Boch dinnerware, glasses and cutlery for the past three months every time they spend $20 or more at Woolworths.

On this TikTok, the shopper redeemed a large amount of their credits and took home at least four packs of Villeroy & Boch plates and bowls, worth $40 each, before the promotion expires this week.

Her video has since gone viral, drawing a mixed response from viewers, with many pointing out that the savings were not gifts.

The bill was reduced by hundreds after the shopper redeemed daily rewards points for free dinnerware.

“So you bought their average quality cookware and used the points you earned by spending thousands on it, so it’s not really free is it?” said one.

Another added: ‘You’re playing the game wrong if you’re spending thousands to get a couple of plates.

Other viewers noted that the shopper was part of the Bunch, a Woolworths members-only community dedicated to tasting, tasting and discussing all things food where the membership is currently full.

The supermarket giant praised the smart shopper move.

“That’s why we encourage customers to become Everyday Rewards members,” a spokesperson said.

“Joining the program is free, and points earned can be used to save at your next store, and even though it’s almost a year away, customers are saving for the festive season with Bank for Christmas.”
