Woolworths confirms major change to its mango range just in time for summer

Woolworths has launched a new mango variety just in time for summer.

The Maha Bliss mangoes, specially bred to be easier to eat, do a much thinner and flatter seed compared to the bulky mango seeds that Aussies are used to.

Due to the smaller Maha Bliss seed, originating from Thailand but now grown in Darwin, the fruit consists almost exclusively of pulp.

It is also said to have an intensely sweet and buttery flavor.

So far, Woolworths is the only major supermarket to stock the new type in Australia.

Maha Bliss mangoes will be available in stores in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.

The mango season starts at the end of September and lasts until approximately April.

Until recently, Australians could buy eleven varieties, of which the juicy Kensington Pride (also known as Bowen mangoes) was by far the most popular.

It accounted for about 40 percent of all mangoes grown.

Other types of mangoes, which are rich in calcium, fiber and potassium, are Calypso, Honey Gold and R2E2.

HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD MANGO

The best way to buy a mango is to use your nose: smell it!

A ripe fresh mango should have a fragrant tropical aroma that varies in intensity from very subtle to strong depending on the variety.

A ripe mango will be firm and light to the touch, so avoid mangoes that are hard, very soft or bruised.

Also avoid mangoes that are wrinkled or shriveled, as these are overripe and have an unpleasant fermented taste.
