Woolworths confirms huge change to shopping baskets across stores
- The new Woolworths baskets may be resisting backlash from shoppers
- Last year, Coles made a similar design change and customers were furious
Woolworths customers have noticed new shopping baskets in stores, but there may be a flaw in the design.
The supermarket confirmed the change and has started offering new eco-friendly baskets with one handle instead of two.
The green baskets are made from 100 percent recycled plastic and give used milk bottles a second life.
A similar move was made by Coles earlier this year, but thousands complained that the baskets are 'terrible to carry, large and clumsy'.
With this in mind, Woolworths' decision to offer single-handle baskets could backfire.
The new Woolworths baskets may be eco-friendly, but they're designed with one handle instead of two. The move could face criticism from shoppers after Coles made a similar change
One customer criticized the Coles baskets, saying: 'Coles needs to tell me why they've fixed something that isn't broken.'
“It's constantly knocking against my leg.”
“Hi Coles, just dropping by to say I hate your new red baskets (and that's a word I don't use often),” said another.
The Coles baskets save the equivalent of eighteen two-litre milk bottles from landfill.
Adrian Widjy, head of the Places in Sydney social media pages, visited the Woolworths in Ashfield North and shared a video online.
In the clip, he praised the baskets, but he didn't seem to like the new single-handle design.
A Woolworths spokesperson told FEMAIL: 'We are working hard to become greener for our customers and the environment.
'Our recycled trolleys are very popular with customers and are currently available in selected stores. We plan to roll these out in new stores in the coming years.
'We also have trolley baskets made from 100 per cent recycled plastic and give used milk bottles a second life in our stores, while also reducing the use of virgin materials to make trolleys.'
