Why this photo has sent Woolworths customers into a frenzy and ignited calls to bring back a beloved feature

A Woolworths menu from more than 50 years ago has left customers panicking over the cheap price of meals, sparking calls to bring back the service.

A customer uploaded a photo to Facebook on Tuesday of the Woolworths menu showing a variety of cooked meals available in the cafeteria in 1970.

“Old Woolworths Caffeteria Lunch Menu from 1970,” he wrote in the post.

“I’m taking orders, please write down what you want for lunch…”

The cafeteria was a popular part of Woolworths in the 1950s and 1960s, before eventually closing.

The menu had several options, including a lunch special of baked macaroni with old English cheese for just 99 cents.

Customers were also served coleslaw, vegetables and a sandwich with butter.

They had the other option of choosing ice cream finished with chocolate sauce.

The cafeteria also served fried meatloaf dinners, including brown gravy, creamy whipped potatoes and garden vegetables, for just 95 cents.

Customers can also choose to have a roast beef dinner with the same side dishes for $1.10.

Hundreds of customers said the menu image brought back fond memories of the times they visited the cafeteria.

“Bring back the good old days,” one person wrote.

“Dinner was cheap back then,” another added.

Others were shocked by the low prices, saying the items would cost customers much more today.

“Omg how things have changed,” one said.

“That’s quite scary when you see the prices now,” someone else wrote.

‘Multiply the prices [by] 13-14 and it would be the same today,” a third added.

Some said that the price of food served in the cafeteria would cost the same now as it did then.

‘Wages were low, no comparison. In 1970 I made $15 a week!! So that was expensive for me,” one person said.

“All relevant with wages paid then to wages paid today,” another person wrote.

The average full-time worker in Australia earned an annual salary of $7,600 in 1975, meaning they earned about $20 a week.

The average full-time adult today earns a weekly wage of $1,886.50, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
