Shopper issues warning to check your meat labels after his weekly grocery store visit
- Brendon from Adelaide bought 1kg of ground beef from Woolworths
- On his kitchen scale at home, the package weighed only 496 grams
A customer has warned all customers to double check the weight of their meat after a recent trip to the grocery store resulted in a labeling mishap.
Brendon, from Adelaide, bought a 1kg pack of ground beef, but soon realized it contained only 496g of meat when he weighed the product.
The man immediately warned about the missing 2 ounces of ground beef and asked all other customers to keep an eye on the deli labels.
Brendon went back to Woolworths to return the product and checked the weight of several other products.
Woolworths sells ground beef in packs of two different sizes, and while many believed Brendon was the victim of an accidental misprint, he revealed that he took the standard 1kg pack of meat.

Brendon posted pictures of his undersized ground beef and shared his experience.
“Weigh your flesh,” he said. Is this normal? I called Woolies and they just said to come over and they would replace it.’
“It was in the larger package so I assumed it was 1kg,” he added. “When I returned the ground beef, the deli took four different packs, and they were all different weights.”
Brendon then said Woolworths was looking into the situation.
Many shoppers indicate that they use the fruit and vegetable scale to check their groceries.
“I weigh prepackaged items like strawberries and cherry tomatoes because you never know if someone has smuggled one or two,” said one woman. “It’s a good idea to do the same with your meat.”
‘I use the scale in the fruit and vegetable department to weigh everything before I buy it, because I’ve noticed that sometimes the bin isn’t that full. Quite a few were underweight and not much more than 1 kg,” said another.
But others were still convinced that the label was just a misprint.
“Pretty easy to see the wrong label was used,” said one man.
“I would say that the wrong sticker was accidentally put on the packaging, that was definitely not on purpose,” said another.
Several customers have vowed to always check their food in the future.
“Wow, I’ve never checked my meat for weight before, but now I do,” said one woman.
“I noticed something wrong while cooking tonight – like it didn’t seem like the ‘usual’ amount of ground beef, but I didn’t think to weigh it,” wrote another.

A spokesperson for Woolworths revealed that supermarket products are regularly inspected and checked for compliance with net weight requirements.
“We want our customers to shop with the confidence that they are getting what they pay for. We are aware of the customer’s claim and are investigating it with our suppliers,” they told FEMAIL.
“Our suppliers have a series of checks and balances to ensure that our products meet trade measurement requirements.
“If our customers are ever concerned about the weight of a product, we encourage them to return it and get a refund.”
