I scored two whole chickens from Woolworths for $1.50 – here’s exactly what I do to ensure discounts every time

An Australian mother told how she bought two whole chickens at Woolworths for just $1.50 each.

Katherine Clayton from Perth noticed that the prices in her local store were marked down at 4pm on weekdays. Since then, she has been coming in ten minutes early and sticking around to grab the discounted items.

This time, the 2kg of seasoned chicken was originally priced at $14.25 and $13.35, but Katherine was able to purchase the poultry for only $1.43 and $1.34, as it was almost past its expiration date.

To score a bargain, the mother of two told FEMAIL customers to speak to staff to find out the best time to shop for discounts so they could shamelessly grab the bargains.

“I love buying nice things. I would rather have $1 in my pocket to spend on a new handbag than pay it to Woolies,” said Katherine, co-founder and CEO of insurance brand Peachii.

“I’m always looking for specials. We cook everything at home. I just noticed a pattern, got a few bargains early on and then talked to the staff. Now I know the best times to shop.”

Katherine shared the knowledge in a video and encouraged others to follow in her footsteps.

“I’m warning you, this is a contact sport. If you can’t talk to people or interact with grocery store employees, this game is not for you,” she said.

“But if you really want to save big, listen up,” she said.

First, consumers should find out what time their local supermarket is offering a meat discount, as times vary by location.

“It happens at the same time every day. They have a rhythm,” she said.

‘At 3:50 I’m there and I’m sneaking, I’m ready. When the man or woman with the gun comes out and starts [putting on] ‘Those stickers, there you are.’

Katherine said she put everything she had eaten in the freezer for later.

To save more money, Katherine always shops at different supermarkets, avoids online shopping and never goes during ‘peak hours’.

“The day before a holiday or a long weekend there are often big discounts, before the supermarket closes the next day,” she says.

As a busy mom, she always plans ahead so she can ensure her freezer and pantry are stocked instead of buying produce at full price.

“I think it can also be a challenge if you’re always in a rush when you go shopping or you always wait until you’ve finished everything before you go shopping, because you don’t have the flexibility to wait for a sale,” she said.

By thinking ahead, Katherine has been able to save money to buy handbags, Mecca products and family essentials. She is also saving for a family holiday to Europe next year.

The short video has now been viewed more than 84,000 times, with many thanking her for sharing her insights.

A Woolworths employer wrote: ‘I’ve worked at Woolies for years and they are cracking down on this. The day before the expiry date is about 15-20 percent, the day of the expiry date is at best 30-50 percent. Depends on how much of each item needs to be cleared.

‘Every store is different, but it’s all about how much room there is for discounts.’

Katherine added that it is important to be polite and respectful when talking to supermarket staff and asking for a discount.
