Adelaide train assault: Women allegedly spat at, assaulted and verbally abused on the Gawler line

A man has been charged after he allegedly assaulted and verbally abused several female passengers on a suburban train during an unprovoked incident.

Four women were on a train heading to Adelaide on the Gawler line about 9am on Sunday when the man allegedly punched, punched and spat at them.

The 47-year-old man from Salisbury in Adelaide’s north is also alleged to have verbally abused the women.

None of the four women, believed to be traveling separately, knew the man.

South Australia Police said the alleged incidents occurred between Kilburn and the city.

After the train stopped in Adelaide, the man is said to have jumped the exit barrier and fled the station towards Adelaide Oval.

He was arrested by police a short time later and charged with four counts of assault.

“None of the women [allegedly] assaulted required medical treatment,” South Australia Police said in a statement.

Commuters traveling across the network on Sunday were shocked to hear about the alleged attack.

‘I just think it’s disgusting and it makes me feel unsafe. I never really feel like taking public transportation,” Deanna Watherston said Nine news.

Fellow commuter Melody Silvestri added: ‘Not even being able to be in a public space without being scared…that’s horrible.

The man was granted bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrate’s Court on August 13.

He is also banned from traveling on public transport for three months after being banned from transport.

The latest incident comes days after a group of teenage girls were accused of wreaking havoc and attacking commuters on another train in Adelaide.

An Adelaide mother confronted the teenage girls after they allegedly attacked her 17-year-old daughter earlier this month.

The girl was grabbed by her hair and also punched during the physical altercation.

The teenagers are said to have threatened commuters on the Seaford railway line, on the Eyre Peninsula, for weeks.

Last week, officers from South Australia Police began a week-long operation in an effort to reduce anti-social behavior on public transport across the state.

Officers and members of the dog brigade were deployed across the public transport network to ensure people travel safely on buses and trains.

Anyone who witnessed the alleged attack or has footage of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
