Woman leaves the internet bitterly divided after sharing ‘woke’ PhD thesis on ‘the politics of smell’

A young woman has been mercilessly targeted and attacked after sharing her ‘woke’ dissertation online.

Cambridge-based teacher Dr. Ally Louks sparked a backlash on X, formerly Twitter, this weekend after proudly posting her dissertation, titled “Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose.”

With a hardcover copy of the dissertation in hand, Dr. Louks wrote: ‘I am happy to say that I have passed my viva without corrections and have officially been promoted.’

She later added: ‘To clarify for anyone unfamiliar with academia, I have a PhD in English literature, not a PhD in olfactory ethics – which is the subject of my thesis that earned me the PhD. ‘

Instead of being congratulated on her achievements, Dr. Louks’ post was met with waves of vitriol from right-wing trolls determined to discredit her education.

“You would have spent your years better by getting married and having kids,” one troll commented.

Another wrote: ‘Imagine having your brain so sick and rotten from leftism? Phew.”

One troll even went so far as to call Dr. Louk’s sent vile threats of sexual assault, which she had to report to the police.

‘To be clear: this is where I draw the line. This is abhorrent and illegal and no one should ever have to deal with this,” she wrote.

Despite the backlash, Dr. Louks has also received a lot of support on social media.

‘The recent elections have left the Libs wondering whether the wokeness has perhaps gone too far. This thread – the sheer vitriol directed at a woman celebrating her personal achievement – should make you wonder if perhaps the wokeness has gone too far enough,” one person wrote.

“The vitriol on this post is so bleak. Women can’t post about their achievements without being harassed by misogynists,” wrote a second.

‘My first thought was ‘damn what a useless PhD’, and then I saw all the misogynists in the replies shouting about women’s education and her having children instead. Go girl, get that useless PhD!’ added another.

A fourth commented: ‘Large numbers of people are showering a seemingly nice lady who takes pride in promoting, berating and mocking, showing that the worst thing you can be on social media is serious and vulnerable, especially if you’re a are a woman. ‘

Another wrote: ‘A woman, serious, studious and industrious, devotes her life to interesting and valuable knowledge in itself instead of being a stupid, servile housewife. And guys whose knowledge of the world doesn’t extend beyond UFC stats and crypto are going crazy. Pure misogyny.’

As a result of the vitriol, Dr. Louks said she planned to leave X soon for BlueSky, which is known for its more progressive slant compared to Elon Musk-owned X.

She later joked, “I just know I’m going to be the talk of the English faculty this week.”

Although Dr. Louks is proud of her doctorate, not everyone is happy that she has completed years of higher education.

A woman named A. Rasberry discussed her ordeal with Business Insider, saying she has $250,000 in student debt after earning a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate in business management from Saint Leo University in Florida.

Despite her impressive qualifications, the 38-year-old hasn’t had a job in her field for four years.

“I got my PhD in 2020 and I can’t find a job to save my life,” he admits.

“I am overqualified for most entry-level positions, but I am underqualified for management or leadership positions,” she added.

After failing to find work, Rasberry had to turn to nursing to make ends meet.

“I thought education was the path to financial freedom, but I was wrong,” she said.
