One woman shared an “easy and cheap” way to keep heat from escaping your home by using a floorboard gap filler.

Lydia Sear, from London, filmed the clever hack in a viral TikTok video showing the simple solution to keep your home warm this winter amid the cost of living.

Using DraftEx, a thin reel of flexible rubber, she sealed the gaps between the floorboards to reduce cold drafts and save on energy bills when heating her home.

The video has been viewed nearly 213,000 times and received more than 6,000 likes on her TikTok account @lydsear.

The painter and designer captioned the informative clip: ‘It’s the small changes that count! #fyp #costofliving #costoflivingcrisis #costoflivingcrisisuk #heating #energybills #liztruss’

“PSA: The holes in your floorboards can easily dissipate heat and therefore it will cost you more to keep your house warm, this is a super easy and inexpensive way to fix that,” she wrote of her video.

In the comment section, she explained, “Get it from Amazon called DraftEx – they come in a few different lengths and widths. There is a roller included, but I thought it was unnecessary/outdated.’

Someone commented, “That’s actually not a bad idea. I would take into account that your cavity underneath has ventilation, but otherwise a great idea!’

Lydia replied, “We’re all right and I’m only filling the big one where I can feel the cool air. Something to watch out for!’

Another said: ‘You reminded me to do this!! Where did you get the filler?’

Lyd replied, ‘Amazon! called GraftEx’

While someone else said ‘I have this problem and was looking for a solution but couldn’t find anything. Thank you’

Another warned: ‘Don’t pack them too tightly…wood expands in damp conditions.’

However, Lydia revealed that the products are made of foam so it can “expand and contract on the spot.”

DraftEx costs less than £10 and the fitting process is extremely quick and easy and it is available in 3 sizes, thin, standard and thick.

During the winter months, drafts in your floorboards can lead to significant heat loss and unnecessarily high heating and energy costs.

It is therefore a sensible way to prevent heat from escaping your rooms.
