A woman who was raped while on a stretcher in an emergency room in Italy reportedly committed suicide by jumping out of a hospital window.

The 22-year-old said she was awaiting treatment at Vizzolo Predabissi hospital near Milan when she was raped on the night of May 27 to 28, local media reported.

She told nurses around 4 a.m., who quickly called police, “Help, I’ve been raped,” the Italian newspaper reported Corriere Della Serra.

The suspect, a 28-year-old warehouse worker, was arrested several hours later while sleeping on a stretcher in the emergency room.

On May 28 around 8:30 p.m., the rape victim reportedly jumped from a fourth-floor window of the hospital. Despite efforts by medics to save her life, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 22-year-old said she was awaiting treatment at Vizzolo Predabissi Hospital (pictured) near Milan when she was raped on the night of May 27-28, local media reported.

The suspect denied the rape accusation and told a local court that the sexual encounter was consensual.

He said he “didn’t force anyone” and that they talked and shared a cigarette before they started kissing.

He could not remember how he ended up in the hospital and told investigators that he had been drinking a lot of alcohol and smoking a few joints with some friends, according to local reports.

The 28-year-old was reportedly lying drunk on a bench when his concerned friends called an ambulance.

He is said to have first met the 22-year-old victim when he arrived at the hospital, where he was reportedly placed next to her on a stretcher.

The local prosecutor has ordered an autopsy on the woman’s body while investigators sift through emergency room CCTV footage to determine exactly what happened.

The suspect is reportedly still in custody in prison.

A spokesperson for Vizzolo Predabissi said in a statement: “The entire hospital is still in shock.”
