Woman nurses injured one-winged bumblebee who followed her home back to health – and now she lives in her garden

A woman nursed an injured bumblebee back to health and now it lives in her garden, where she cares for it.

Katharina Wallen, from Germany, sent TikTok in a meltdown after she shared a video of her befriending a one-winged bumblebee.

After bringing the poor, injured bumblebee to safety, she named her Sweet Pea and began building her a home in her yard.

She said, “Three weeks ago I saw this bumblebee walking along the country road. It started following me.

“She was obviously looking for flowers and seemed very hungry.”

Katharina then plucked a flower and placed it in front of Sweet Pea so she could extract the nectar, but she soon realized that the little bumblebee couldn’t fly.

Sweet Pea only had one wing intact, which is why she was walking around instead of flying.

“We decided to take care of her, we gave her sugar water and took her in. Then we created a small shelter for her.

“She’s been with us for three weeks now and is feeling really good,” Katharina captioned an excerpt from Sweet Pea, dousing herself in bright purple flowers.

In the adorable clip, the bumblebee can be seen, covered in bright yellow pollen, looking like she’s having the time of her life.

She also revealed that she picks fresh flowers for Sweet Pea every day and even built her a small cave in the mud where she can relax.

“She has become a cherished part of our time,” Katharina said in the video, which has been viewed a whopping 42.4 million times.

While there are many different species of bumblebees, their average lifespan is estimated to be about 28 days.

After bringing the poor, injured bumblebee to safety, she named her Sweet Pea and began building a home for the insect in her garden.

But Sweet Pea has already outlived her life expectancy, because Katharina found her more than four weeks ago.

According to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, a third of the remaining bumblebee species are on at least one of the English, Welsh and Scottish priority species lists for conservation.

The Trust states that habitat loss is the main reason for the decline of the fuzzy insects.

Bees are good pollinators and, like other insects, have a major impact on food products, such as tomatoes, peas, apples and strawberries.

They also help pollinate wildflowers and without this pollination a species would not be able to produce seeds, the Trust says.
