A woman armed with a knife has been tackled to the ground by police after allegedly threatening drivers and blocking traffic on a busy highway.

The tense scenes were captured by a truck driver traveling on the M1 highway on the NSW Mid North Coast at 4pm on Tuesday.

In the shocking video, the 52-year-old woman was seen holding the large knife as police officers tried to negotiate with her from about 10 meters away.

As the woman starts walking towards the officers, a man runs after her, tasers her and then throws her to the ground.

Other officers at the scene seized the knife, believed to be a machete, before the woman was arrested and taken to Taree police station.

The 52-year-old had allegedly threatened other drivers and blocked traffic before officers arrived on the scene in Koorainghat, a coastal town near Taree.

She was charged with attempted stalking/intimidation for the purpose of fear of (personal) harm, common assault, possession or use of a prohibited weapon without a permit and use of a knife in public places causing the person to fear for his or her safety.

The woman was refused bail to appear in Taree Local Court on Wednesday.
