A woman has been killed in her home by a stray bullet fired by fans celebrating Argentina’s dramatic World Cup win in India. 

The woman, 50, named as Salam Ningol Laishram Ongbi Ibetomi Devi by Indian press, was killed in Imphal in Manipur at around 11.30pm on Sunday after revellers fired a bullet, police said on Monday. 

Family members heard loud fire crackers and gunshots during frenzied celebrations after Argentina’s victory over France in the Qatar World Cup final. 

A police officer said the bullet hit her in the back and two bullet holes were found on the first floor of her house, which is built from galvanised iron sheets, reported NDTV

Northeast live said she was holding a two-year-old child when she was shot Singjamei Wangma Bheigapati in Imphal’s east district. 

The news outlet added she was known to be an Argentina fan.  

The police officer said: ‘While one bullet struck her back, another went through the GI sheets.’ 

The family said they would not perform the last rites until the culprits have been arrested.

Ecstatic fans have celebrated wildly all over the world after Argentina defeated France in the final of the Qatar World Cup. 

In a tense and rollercoaster match played in Lusail Stadium, Argentina, led by star Lionel Messi, took home its third World Cup after beating France, the defending champions, 4-2 on penalties after drawing 3-3 after extra time.
