I don’t buy bottled water that’s been in the sun and you shouldn’t either

A content creator has revealed that she doesn’t buy bottled water that’s been left out in the sun.

Kayle, a Chicago nanny who didn’t want to give her last name, shared a short TikTok showing stacks of bottles of water selling for $6.99 outside a gas station.

In her video about the 24-packs, she warned viewers, “I may be crazy, but I hope no one buys this water. The reason for this is because the sun shines on this plastic all day long. Do not drink water that is sitting outside.”

The influencer, who captioned her video “drinking plastic much,” sparked a major online debate: is bottled water that’s been left out in the sun safe to drink?

Lead researcher, Huase Ou, who is behind the Study of Eco-Environment & Healthshared the following: ‘Our findings provide compelling evidence that plastic bottles, when exposed to sunlight, can release toxic substances that pose health risks.’

For their research, scientists from Jinan University in China analyzed six types of plastic bottles from Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Japan and China.

The study included different types of water, such as spring water, distilled water and artesian water, and the effects of sunlight and UVA radiation on each type of water.

The scientists found that the water bottles were leaking chemicals, including a highly toxic and cancer-causing chemical called n-hexadecane and other carcinogens.

According to the National Library of Medicinen-Hexadecane, known as H304, is labeled as a ‘dangerous aspiration hazard’ and ‘may be fatal if swallowed, and [if it] enters the respiratory tract.

Huase warned: ‘Consumers should be aware of these risks, especially in environments where bottled water is exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time.’

The director of the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute, Dr. Kellogg Schwab, has Time: ‘A chemical called bisphenol-A (BPA), along with other chemicals used in plastic manufacturing, can leach into your water if the bottle is heated or left in the sun.’

These toxic chemicals have also been linked to causing heart disease and cancer.

While the scientists behind the study do not recommend drinking bottled water that has been left out in the sun as a regular beverage, they did say that the “potential health risks” of doing so appear small.

The researchers added: ‘Given the small mass of a single bottle, the volatilization of [these potentially toxic compounds] from an individual container would be insignificant.

‘Even after prolonged exposure to light, the potential health risks associated with inhaling [toxic chemicals]when opening and drinking bottled water, seem manageable.’
