Horror as woman, 25, plunges four storeys to her death down a lift shaft after she steps into void when doors open with the elevator not there

A woman fell four floors to her death after stepping into a lift shaft when the doors opened even though the lift was not there.

Clelia Ditano, 25, died in the early morning hours in her apartment building in Fasano, in the province of Brindisi, southern Italy.

She reportedly pressed the elevator button and stepped through the doors as they opened, not realizing the elevator was not there.

Clelia’s father tragically found her body this morning after calling her phone, which he heard ringing in the lift.

He alerted emergency services, who arrived at the scene around 8 a.m., local media reported.

Just hours before her death, Clelia had posted a photo in an off-white top and matching skirt to her Instagram Story, seemingly ready for a night out.

She also shared a photo of herself in a black dress, chillingly writing on the day of her death: “Here’s to what’s to come.”

The 25-year-old, who worked as a cleaner at several bed and breakfasts in the area, enjoyed dancing and going out, according to her friends.

A friend, Ilenia, wrote heartbreakingly in a tribute to Clelia: ‘It wasn’t meant to be this way, you had to fulfill all your dreams, have the family you wanted, find true love…’

Ilenia said Clelia’s death will leave a huge void in her life, as the young woman was “a fundamental part” of her life.

Another friend asked, “How can someone die like that?” A third added: ‘No one deserves to die like this.’

“It wasn’t meant to be like this… Beautiful and kind, you had a life ahead of you,” Clelia’s friend Betty commented in the latest photo on Clelia’s Instagram account.

Police officers and firefighters are working together to determine why the doors opened despite there being no elevator and why the elevator was stuck several floors below.

“We can assume a malfunction in the locking system, because the door is only allowed to open when the cabin is on the ground,” an investigator told local media.
