A woman who claims Disney-obsessed adults are “shallow” and “not very intelligent” has attracted criticism online.
In a post that has now been deleted, user @mountrain_state4715 wrote in the Unpopular opinion topic on Reddit to share her thoughts on the matter – in less than 24 hours it has over 2,000 comments.
She wrote: “I fully expect the normal reactions to things like this. “X is not more pathetic than Y.” Maybe, but maybe Y is also pathetic.
“When I meet other adults who fill their social media with Disney, put Disney junk on their vehicles, think taking your kids to Disney = parental requirement, etc… I know right away that we can never be friends.
‘I could never click with someone so superficial. And yes, if you’re an adult obsessed with Disney, you’re an extremely shallow person, and probably not very intelligent either.
The video was filmed on day two of the family’s fifth vacation, so there were more expenses to be done
“For the record, I don’t hate Disney, but the weird obsession some people have is disturbing.”
However, the post didn’t get the approval she might have expected, but the comments are filled with people defending “Disney adults.”
The top answer, with more than 2,000 upvotes, suggested the poster was hypocritical, writing: “I’m not a huge fan of Disney either, but isn’t it the definition of shallow to assume you can never be friends with someone who is obsessed with Disney? ?’
Others responded, “Making judgments based on surface observations is superficial? This is my shocked face’ and ‘I just wanted to comment on the irony’.
Another person compared Disney lovers to sports fans, writing, “The most obvious analogy here is sports.
“There are plenty of guys where you can scroll through their social media and almost every post is related to the sports team they’re obsessed with.
“For whatever reason, that obsession is seen as normal, but nothing like Disney.
“In the end, our obsessions will always look weird to people who don’t share them, and normal to people who do.”
The post didn’t garner the approval she might have expected, but the comments are filled with people defending “Disney adults.”
A popular answer from another user reads “Moral of the story: let people enjoy things,” to which a Redditor replied, “Exactly! I’m the only “non-Disney” person in our group, but I love my friends and I’m genuinely happy when they get so excited about “x”. I’m glad they’re not afraid to show their joy and silliness!’
Someone else said: ‘One of my friends is a Disney lover. They know it’s not my thing, but I’ll be damn excited about something Disney they tell me about because I’m excited that they’re excited. That is it.’
Although some agreed with what the original poster said.
One Redditor wrote, “I mean… they have a point. People who are obsessed with everything can become obnoxious if they go too far.
“I find it so funny how angry people have become about this issue; we all know that any obsessive fixation can be unpleasant.
“It could be sports, or Nicki Minaj, or Disney. The problem is not the thing itself, but the fixation and obsession that turns people away.’
Another added: ‘Lol. Sports are so much more substantial than a corporate theme park,” while someone else wrote: “When your identity revolves entirely around one thing, you need to expand and grow.”
