Woman is attacked by a shark in waters near Mackay, Queensland

A woman has been rushed to hospital after being attacked by a shark in the waters off Queensland.

The woman was on a boat about 10 hours off the coast of Mackay when she was bitten on the lower leg at 4.30pm on Wednesday.

The woman was rescued by HMAS Warramunga after naval personnel were informed of her injuries following a distress call.

The woman was treated on the ship before arriving in Mackay Harbor where she was taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

She suffered several cuts to her lower leg in the attack.

It comes five years after a British tourist had his foot bitten off and a second man suffered serious cuts to his leg during a shark attack in the region.

The men were struggling in the water during a day trip in the Whitsundays, a popular tourist destination, when the shark attacked.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the Queensland Ambulance Service for comment.
