A 42-year-old Wisconsin woman was killed in a car accident five hours after burying her husband.

Sara Nowak had just attended the funeral of her husband, Louis Nowak, when she died Saturday night in a single-vehicle accident on State Highway 106 near Calkins Road in Palmyra.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle, then ended up in a ditch and flipped over. One occupant was thrown from the vehicle, but both died at the scene, Jefferson County Sheriff Paul Milbrath said People.

Louis Nowak, who died of cancer on March 19, had been married to Sara for six years and had six children together. CBS58 reported.

“I don’t think she could do without him,” Sara’s grieving mother Patricia Cartwright told the news outlet, “So she’s with him.”

Her mother added, “We want everyone to remember her as a spirited woman.”

Sara’s father, Randal Cartwright, was shocked by the news of his daughter’s sudden and tragic death.

“It’s very hard because you finish and five and a half hours later you get a call that your daughter had an accident,” he said.

Sara’s parents said the past six months had been harrowing for their daughter, who cared for her husband as he battled the disease.

“He fought, he fought really hard,” Cartwright said of his son-in-law Louis.

He described his daughter as a positive person.

“If there was anything anyone needed,” Cartwright said, his daughter said, “Don’t worry, we’ve got this.”

When Sara’s husband was first diagnosed with cancer in February 2022, her friend Kathy Palmer set up a GoFundMe to raise money for him.

After Sara’s sudden death, Cindy Krey, a family friend, created a GoFundMeto help the grieving family with funeral expenses and living expenses.

“Sara went to see Louis in heaven after his funeral,” Krey wrote.

“Please help them, even if it’s just a few extra dollars you have,” she said. “They just lost their grandpa a few weeks ago, so they have a lot to heal.”

She added: “They need all the help they can get during this horrific time.”

As of Friday afternoon, nearly $11,400 had been raised toward their $25,000 goal.
