A hapless woman in love was conned out of hundreds of pounds by a man she thought was her boyfriend – until his mother revealed he was living a lie.
Beth Thomas, 30, from South Wales, moved to Yorkshire in 2015 and a romance soon blossomed with the man she thought was her new boyfriend.
The man, who did not name Beth, told her he had been abandoned by his parents as a baby and raised by nuns, had been homeless, bankrupt and suffered from chronic multiple sclerosis of the spine.
The 30-year-old decided to help her new boyfriend with food gifts and paying for trips, helping him get back on his feet after his business ventures reportedly hit trouble.
However, it soon became apparent that almost everything she knew about the man was a lie.

Beth said: ‘One evening I got a message from his mother, his supposedly ex but very current partner and the girl’s mother.
“All three told me that everything I believed about him was a lie.
‘He was very quiet with the ex, who also had his four-month-old baby.
‘His mother revealed that he had used similar lies against other women to cheat them out of money and urged me to cancel all my bank cards and change my passwords in case he did the same to me.
“This was a scam he had used against me, and as I later found out, several other women in the past.”
She even discovered that his multiple sclerosis diagnosis was a lie, and that he had faked a seizure in front of her out of compassion.
Shortly afterwards, Beth confronted the scammer, who denied ever doing such things and claimed his ex-girlfriend was ‘psycho’ and was lying to get him back.

What he didn’t realize, however, was that Beth had also received confirmation from both his mother and his ex-girlfriend’s mother.
This was enough for Beth to cut off all communication with the man and try to come to terms with the movie-worthy experience she had endured over the past two months.
After the incredible experience, Beth took to her TikTok account she shared with her friend Molly Cookson, called Dating Unhinged, and shared her story.
‘I was quite traumatized by it all. The amount of lies someone could tell and perpetuate was terrifying,” she said.
However, it soon became apparent that almost everything she knew about the man was a lie

‘I have certainly learned to trust again, but unfortunately that trust is still being violated by former partners.’
When Beth told others about her ordeal, she found that most people were incredibly supportive, yet shocked at how someone could lie so effortlessly.
‘When I tell people, they can’t quite believe it’s all true. “The level of lies being told is what shocks people the most because it is so ridiculous you would think it couldn’t be made up,” she said.
‘My friends and family were great during this time, as was the employer we were both working with at the time. My boss was just brilliant.”
