Woman, 25, ends up in wheelchair after nurse performs ‘strange’ fat removal procedure in her child’s bedroom
A woman in Brazil has been left in a wheelchair after a nurse performed a “strange” cosmetic procedure on her. The procedure took place outside the hospital, in a child’s bedroom at the nurse’s home.
Ester Maia Corecha da Silva, 25, went to the nursing home for treatments to remove belly fat and cellulite — lumpy, harmless flesh along the thighs, hips and buttocks.
Although Ms Da Silva initially found it strange that the treatment was being carried out at a private home, she trusted the qualifications of the nurse, who also claimed to be a beautician.
Just hours later, the mother of one was rushed to hospital after her buttocks became inflamed and she was left in debilitating pain.
A month later, Ms Da Silva is still wheelchair-bound, as she is in too much pain to stand or walk. She says she needs “(physio)therapy and treatment so I can walk again and resume my normal life.”

“I need physiotherapy and treatment so that I can walk again and resume my normal life,” Ms Da Silva said.
Ms Da Silva said she noticed something was wrong within hours of the procedure.
Later that evening she told the nurse that the “products” used in the procedure were leaking from her skin.
The skin quickly became seriously inflamed, causing severe pain, and Mrs. Da Silva had to go to hospital.
Upon arrival at the emergency room, scans were taken of the affected areas. Cysts and abnormal tissue (nodules) were seen. These had reached all the way to her coccyx, the small curved bone at the base of her spine.
“The doctors said this product can migrate. It could even reach my feet,” she told local media.
Da Silva’s condition is reportedly so serious that she can no longer care for her autistic daughter and needs help from her mother, Cristiana Maia.
Mrs Maia said: ‘It is very painful to see her (my daughter) sitting in a wheelchair today.’
It is unclear exactly what procedure Ms. Da Silva had performed, but there are several treatments that are not recommended for removing cellulite due to lack of evidence of their effectiveness or potential dangers.
For example, mesotherapy involves receiving a series of injections in the areas where cellulite occurs.
These needles can be filled with anything from hormones and enzymes to caffeine and herbal extracts.
It is unclear exactly what Ms. Da Silva did, although there are very few approved and effective treatments for cellulite
These are thought to break down the body’s fat cells. However, there are warnings.
“Because each practitioner uses a unique blend of ingredients, there is no way to know which ingredients, if any, are effective,” according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association.
Dr. Fábio Santiago, a plastic surgeon in Brazil, told local media: “Besides hyaluronic acid, there is no other substance that is considered safe for buttocks enlargement.”
Other substances “are considered extremely harmful to our bodies,” leading to an “intense inflammatory response” that can cause severe pain.
Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body’s connective tissues to keep areas like the eyes and skin hydrated.
Products containing hyaluronic acid, such as creams, can improve the appearance of cellulite, but they do not completely remove cellulite.
The police is investigating the case.
