Wolves striker Matheus Cunha has been banned for two matches by the FA and fined £80,000 after an altercation with an Ipswich staffer earlier this month.

The Brazilian shoved his hand in a security official’s face as tempers flared after the final whistle of Wolves’ dramatic defeat to the Tractor Boys.

Cunha, who has stared for the Midlands club despite their struggles, was cleared to feature in matches against Leicester, Manchester United and Tottenham as his case was reviewed.

But the 25-year-old will now miss Wolves’ Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Monday, as well as their FA Cup third round away trip to Bristol City.

New Wolves manager Vitor Pereira can count his blessings at the ruling, given that the forward was likely to miss some time anyway after being sent off at half-time in the weekend draw with Spurs.

Ahead of their clash in north London, Pereira, who has made an unbeaten start since replacing Gary O’Neil at Molineux, indicated the club expected Cunha to receive a ban.

“We try to prepare other players because if it happens we have to be ready with other players,” the Wolves boss said.

“They are working, they are doing a good job, they are trying to understand the idea, the intention of what we want, with and without the ball, waiting for an opportunity.”

Wolves are bracing themselves for a nerve-wracking January, with interest growing in their star man, who has scored 10 goals and provided four assists for the side’s 17-hour lead.

The likes of Manchester United and Arsenal could test the club’s resolve when the window opens on Wednesday.
