Wolves have been charged by the FA after their supporters were found to have chanted homophobic chants during last month’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.

The match – which Wolves won 1–0 at Molineux – was marred by the behavior of some of the home side’s fans and an announcement was made telling them to stop singing.

However, some of the supporters responded by shouting the announcement and they began to sing the homophobic chants louder.

As a result, three arrests were made by West Midlands Police and the FA have now confirmed that the club has been officially charged.

A statement read: ‘Wolverhampton Wanderers have been charged with two breaches of FA rule E21 after their Premier League game against Chelsea on Saturday, April 8.

“It is alleged that during the 61st and 71st minutes of the game the club failed to ensure that spectators and/or its supporters, and anyone posing as its supporters or followers, behave in an orderly manner and do not use words or otherwise behave in a manner that is inappropriate, abusive, abusive, indecent or abusive, with explicit or implicit reference to sexual orientation.”

Wolves strongly criticized the actions of those responsible after the confrontation on April 8.

A club spokesman said: “We strongly condemn the discriminatory chants directed at Chelsea supporters during today’s game.

In response to the chants, supporters were reminded via a public address system that discriminatory behavior and such chants will not be tolerated at Molineux.

“Homophobia, like all other forms of discrimination, has no place in football or society, and anyone who engages in discriminatory behavior is committing a criminal offence.”

The club has been given until May 15 to respond to the charges.

The FA’s action on the chant – which has been heard at a number of Chelsea matches this season – comes after they added it to the list of infringements in January, meaning the governing body could take action against clubs whose supporters singing during competitions.

At the time, an FA spokesman said: ‘We strongly condemn all abusive, insulting and discriminatory chants in football stadiums and are committed to eradicating this behaviour.
