A teenage driver with a long criminal record who allegedly fled the scene of a high-speed accident and left his 12-year-old friend to die in the wreckage was “horrible” in his actions, a court has heard.

The 17-year-old – who cannot be named for legal reasons – then reportedly sobbed into a stolen Holden at high speed with two passengers in the car.

Parramatta Children’s Court heard he then swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed into a traffic light at around 1.35 am in Wollongong, south of Sydney.

The driver and another teenager are said to have fled the scene of the accident in Towradgi, leaving his 12-year-old mortally injured passenger in the wrecked Barina.

The young boy somehow managed to drag himself out of the car and reach a house in the nearby suburb of Balgownie.

But he died shortly afterwards from critical injuries sustained in Tuesday’s crash.

Police Prosecutor Maya Obirek opposed bail, saying the driver, who was arrested Friday in Goulburn, showed “heartless contempt,” the police said. Daily Telegram.

“Two fled leaving the 12-year-old in an unresponsive state and left him to die… the behavior was absolutely abhorrent,” Ms. Obirek said.

The court heard that the 17-year-old driver has a significant criminal record, including violent crimes, domestic violence and driving stolen cars.

He was also the subject of a court order at the time of the crash.

On Saturday, the boy faced six charges, including dangerous driving resulting in death, negligent driving resulting in death, and two separate counts of failing to stop and assist.

Magistrate Paul Mulroney agreed to Ms Obirek’s request to refuse bail, saying he had “no confidence” that the teen would meet the terms of the bail.

The magistrate also said there was “a strong case” to support the claim that the 17-year-old was responsible for the 12-year-old’s death.

He was found critically injured at a friend’s home in Balgownie around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, half an hour after the stolen car hit a traffic light.

He was treated by paramedics and transferred to Wollongong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are also investigating whether the crash is linked to a dangerous TikTok trend called ‘creepin’ while ya sleepin’ – in which young Australians film themselves committing serious crimes, including stealing cars and driving at high speeds.

TikTok has confirmed that it will remove videos with the hashtag, along with other videos, including #blackoutchallenge, which have users holding their breath until they pass out.

Friends and family have flocked online to commemorate the 12-year-old.

“Love you my brah… we’ll see you soon love you so much rest in peace my soulja my cuzz, rest in paradise,” one wrote.

“We just need the right closure for whatever happens, you my little darling.”

Another cousin posted ‘My heart hurts, RIP little cuzzy taken way too soon. Our hearts are shattered,” as the boy’s aunt wrote, “Rest in dreamtime, cousin. #forever12.’

Police rushed to the crime scene after officers from the nearby Corrimal Police Station heard about the crash, but the vehicle was empty when they arrived.

“We would appeal to anyone who may have social media content related to the incidents that happened this morning to come forward,” said Jason Hogan, Acting Superintendent of Police for the NSW.

‘We are investigating all lines of research and the social media line is also being investigated.’
