Wollongbar police operation: TAFE students are ordered to stay indoors as emergency incident unfolds

  • TAFE students were told to stay indoors
  • Emergency police assistance is on its way

Police are currently negotiating with someone on a private property in NSW’s Northern Rivers, resulting in the closure of a nearby TAFE.

Emergency services responded to a reported welfare concern at the property in Wollongbar, between Lismore and Alstonville, at 8am on Thursday.

Staff and students at nearby TAFE have since been ordered to remain indoors as a precaution while the ‘high-risk’ incident unfolds.

Local residents of Wollongbar have also been ordered to shelter in place for the time being.

Police negotiators and officers from the Tactical Operations Unit try to talk to the suspected armed person on site.

A police helicopter has also been spotted flying low over the area as part of the active police operation underway.

A NSW Police spokesperson said there was no ongoing danger to the public.

“Officers from the Richmond Police District remain on scene – with assistance from PolAir, police negotiators and the Tactical Operations Unit,” the spokesperson said.

“As a result of the ongoing operation, Bruxner Hwy is closed in both directions between Sneaths Road and McLeans Ridges Road.”

The closure of the Bruxner Highway has led to lengthy traffic delays and motorists have been urged to avoid the area.
