WNBA MVP A’Ja Wilson slammed for resurfaced ‘racist’ comments about ‘privileged’ white Aces teammate Kelsey Plum and UConn’s Paige Bueckers

Basketball fans are outraged after a clip surfaced of WNBA Most Valuable Player A’Ja Wilson discussing white player privilege.

Wilson specifically referenced Las Vegas Aces teammate Kelsey Plum, who she talks to in the clip, and University of Connecticut star Paige Bueckers.

“As Black women, Paige reminds me a lot of you guys,” Wilson told Plum as the two WNBA champions watched an NCAA Final Four game between Bueckers’ Huskies and Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes. “For example, you say, ‘It’s not really about me.’ She knows. And she knows how her privilege got her to this point.”

At one point you hear Plum say “thank you” to Wilson.

‘And also, [Bueckers is] Of course I’m good at basketball,” Wilson continued. “She understands her privilege. It’s just what pushes her over the top in a way. It reminds me a lot of you. And I mean, that’s a compliment

Wilson, a three-time MVP and two-time WNBA champion, is now facing criticism for the comments, which some see as discriminatory.

“That’s a terrible view,” one fan wrote on X.

“Gosh, what an ego,” another wrote, adding, “a racist ego.”

Several commenters pointed out that Wilson, a 28-year-old South Carolina resident, actually attended a private school.

“Yet she went to a private school that had 25,000 annual tuition,” one person wrote. ‘That’s a privilege.’

Wilson’s high school, Heathwood Hall, charges more than $20,000 a year for high school students’ tuition. It is unclear how much Wilson’s family was charged and whether she received any form of financial assistance.

Buckers, on the other hand, attended a public high school in Minnesota before transferring to Connecticut, where she won all three Player of the Year honors in 2021.

But not everyone was angry with Wilson. Some think her comments in the clip were taken out of context.

“Y’all are misinterpreting this,” one fan wrote on social media. ‘A’ja has said time and again how hard a worker he is [Plum] is. That would never make them smaller.

“She praised her and Paige for being aware of their privilege and using it to speak out about the obvious biases their peers face.”
