A possible Covid outbreak has led to Chicago Sky abruptly canceling practice on Tuesday morning.
According to the Chicago Sun-TimesSeveral players on the team felt ill, leading to the last-minute cancellation.
The team’s medical staff advised a number of players to wear masks at Sky’s training facility.
“We are testing for COVID-19 and speaking to our doctors to see what they suggest moving forward,” Sky chief executive Jeff Pagliocca told the Sun-Times.
Although the Sun-Times did not name specific players, the newspaper later reported Annie Costabile said guard Chennedy Carter would not be in the team’s game against the Washington Mystics on Wednesday due to “health and safety protocols.”
Chicago Sky ended training early on Tuesday and tested the team for a possible Covid outbreak
At the time of publication, Chennedy Carter is the only player on the injured list for Wednesday.
At the time of publication, it was unclear which other players were sick. Carter is the only one on Chicago’s injured list.
Fans speculated that Carter was the only one listed on the injury report and that she could be the source of a potential outbreak, with one saying, “The whole WNBA is going to get Covid soon because of Chennedy Carter.”
Many others on social media wished Carter well and told her to feel better during her recovery.
The news comes less than 24 hours before a game between the Mystics and Sky was set to kick off at Wintrust Arena in suburban Chicago. The Sky also play the Indiana Fever on Friday.
According to Pagliocca, the team believes they have enough fit players to take on the Mystics.
Chicago last played a game against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, losing narrowly 77-75.
When asked by a reporter if she should test her players, Aces coach Becky Hammon said “it’s the first she’s heard of an illness.” Las Vegas plays the Dallas Wings on Tuesday night.
