Shocking cash withdrawal fee at ATM of major Aussie bank: ‘That’s criminal’

An Australian bank customer is outraged after being charged $7.50 to withdraw his own money from an ATM in Queensland.

A photo of the whopping charge at a NAB branch in Townsville was shared on social media on Sunday, with hundreds of Aussies denouncing the charge.

“That’s criminal!” one person commented.

“I remember a few years ago the big banks promised to keep their ATMs free.”

‘The banks are recognized thieves!’ said another.

‘Obscene. I was charged $3.90 last week and thought that was bad; yours takes the cake,” a third wrote.

The Australian who shared the image said they were not using a foreign card or credit card to withdraw the $100 from their account at Ubank, a subsidiary of NAB.

They decided not to go through with the withdrawal and instead went to a nearby store, where they were charged a lower $2.80.

A NAB spokesperson said the fee was “very strange” and that neither NAB nor Ubank normally charge fees for those types of transactions.

“We are now investigating the ATM to resolve the issue and have contacted the customer to refund any charges incurred,” the spokesperson said.

It has become increasingly difficult to find ATMs in Australia in recent years, let alone ones that don’t charge fees.

In 2016, the Commonwealth Bank led the industry in cutting the $2 fee for ATM withdrawalsThen the banks started eliminating ATMs.

The number of bank ATMs has plummeted along with society’s reliance on cash, with many replaced by third-party machines that cost around $3.

Meanwhile, Bendigo Bank has quietly introduced a fee for customers who want to withdraw money from branches.

Australia’s sixth largest bank will now charge $2.50 for over-the-counter withdrawals at branches.
