With YouTube Music, you can finally look up songs just by singing into your phone
It’s taken a while, but YouTube Music is finally giving users the ability to search for songs by simply singing a tune into a smartphone microphone.
The general YouTube app has had this feature since mid-October 2023 and judging by recent findings images on Reddit, the version on YouTube Music functions in exactly the same way. In the upper right corner next to the search bar is an audio card icon. Tapping it will activate the song search, where you can then play, sing, or hum a tune on your device.
Using the power of artificial intelligence, the app will quickly bring up a track that, according to 9To5Google, corresponds to “the sound of the original recording.” The accuracy of the tool can completely depend on your karaoke skills.
Missing details
Since there is no official announcement yet, many details are missing. To begin with, it is unknown how long you should sing or hum. The original tool required people to make a three-second input before a search could be performed. Presumably it will take the same amount of time, but without official word from the platform it’s hard to say with complete confidence.
Online reports claim that the update is already available on YouTube Music for iOS. However, 9To5Google states that they were unable to find the feature on their iPhones or Android devices. Our Android phone didn’t receive the patch either, so it’s probably in limited release at the moment.
We reached out to Google to ask if it would share official information about YouTube Music’s song search feature, among a few other questions. More specifically, we wanted to know if the feature will be available to everyone, or will it require a YouTube Music Premium subscription? We will update as we get answers.
