Wisconsin police have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with a brutal assault on a University of Wisconsin student who was beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled on Sunday.

Brandon A. Thompson, a local resident, was arrested on charges of first-degree assault, reckless injury and strangulation, according to the Madison Police Department.

Thompson was arrested around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday and admitted to the Dane County Jail around 7:00 a.m., according to jail records.

The student was found with life-threatening injuries around 3:20 a.m. Sunday between two homes in Madison, Wisconsin.

The student was reportedly “picked off the street by a stranger and dragged between two houses” – where a neighbor heard her cries for help.

A neighbor told WISN 12 News the young woman, 20, was as she was walking on a sidewalk when she was forced to enter an area between two houses on Bedford and Wilson streets, where a homeowner heard her scream for help.

Friends claimed the woman was strangled, beaten and sexually assaulted by the random assailant and was left with a broken jaw, according to WISN-12.

She is currently in critical condition but is expected to survive.

Madison police said the incident appears to be an attack by a stranger. After the incident, authorities launched a manhunt for her attacker.

Officers were called early Sunday morning by a neighbor of the 500 block of West Wilson Street, while fellow students were “terrified” of a repeat attack.

University of Wisconsin student Azza Bayoudh said she was terrified when police began knocking on the student’s door at 4am after the attack.

“It was just kind of scary because I thought, that could have been me,” Bayoudh told WISN 12. “So that scared me. So we’ve got our doors locked now and we hope they catch whoever it was.

At a press conference, Madison Police Assistant Chief Paige Valenta confirmed that they had gathered DNA evidence at the scene, adding that they had engaged multiple resources to investigate the incident.

She said: ‘My heart goes out to the victim and her family.

“We have reached out to our partners in the Madison area, including the UW Police Department, to ensure they are supported as they try to confront this horrific crime.”
