Arsenal centre-back William Saliba has signed a new four-year contract with the north London club.

The French defender was a key player for the Gunners last season, making 27 Premier League appearances before suffering a back injury.

Arsenal struggled in his absence and Gabriel Jesus recently claimed the 22-year-old’s injury was when their title chances fell apart.

Saliba has been on the books with the Emirates since signing from Saint-Etienne in 2019, but only made a Premier League appearance last season after impressing on loan at Marseille.

It now looks like he will continue to be a vital cog at Arsenal, with the central defender set to earn £10 million a year until 2028.

He was a key player for Mikel Arteta’s side last season and was sorely missed after being injured in March.

Sporting director Edu said of the Saliba news: ‘We are so happy to have signed a new contract with William Saliba.

“William is part of our vision to retain our talented young players, who we hope will be successful with us for many years to come, so that we can grow and progress together.

“I know the supporters will be as happy as we are that William will stay with us in the future.”

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta added: ‘Having William renew his contract with us was something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. William proved last season how good and how important he is for our team.

“The skill he has at the young age of just 22 is exciting, and there is obviously so much more room for development with any player at this stage of his career. We look forward to continuing to work with William in the years to come.”

He may not be the only exciting young defender lined up for the Gunners next season following reports that an agreement has been reached to sign Ajax centre-back Jurrien Timber.

The Athletic claims negotiations have been completed for an initial £34.3m fee, plus £4.3m in ‘largely realistic bonuses’.

The 22-year-old was also said to have been allowed to undergo a medical examination and complete personal conditions.

Timber played 43 games in all competitions in the Netherlands last season and was previously targeted by Manchester United.

Arsenal have already finalized the signing of Kai Havertz from Chelsea for £65m and have reached an agreement with West Ham on a £105m move for Declan Rice.
