‘Something has gone terribly wrong somewhere!’: William Gallas calls out the Premier League and says he is ‘SHOCKED’ to be left out of their classic 2005-06 Chelsea line-up, despite playing 34 times that season!
- William Gallas was voted in the 2005–06 Premier League Team of the Season
- Gallas was traded for Ashley Cole with Arsenal at the end of the campaign.
William Gallas was shocked to find out that he had been snubbed by the Premier League in an Instagram post celebrating the Chelsea XI of the 2005-06 season.
The French defender, who has also played for the Blues’ rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, was passed over for Spaniard Asier del Horno.
Del Horno appeared just 25 times in the Premier League that season, while the French defender racked up 34 appearances out of a possible 38, one more than he claimed in a dejected Instagram post in response to the slight.
Additionally, Gallas was named in the Premier League Team of the Year as part of a four-member party of champions.
And the now 45-year-old was clearly offended at missing out, taking to social media himself to make his case in response.
William Gallas was shocked by his exclusion from the classic Chelsea XI of the Premier League
“Amazing to note that the Premier League has cut me out of the typical Chelsea 2005/06 squad,” he wrote.
‘With 33 appearances as a starting XI and 5 goals in the Premier League, being voted left-back in the Premier League squad of the 2005/2006 season.
“I tell myself that something has gone terribly wrong somewhere!!”
Gallas was a mainstay in the team that recorded back-to-back top-flight titles and scored five goals in all competitions in 45 games, as well as providing two assists.
Primarily a centre-back, the France international often replaced Mourinho on the left to make way for John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, but only came off the bench twice during the top-flight season.
The Blues also suffered from numerous injury problems on the left side throughout the season, with Wayne Bridge struggling for form in particular.
And the French international was arguably one of the biggest figures in the club’s second successive crown, playing in four different positions, including right-back, centre-back, defensive midfield and left-back.
However, 2005-06 turned out to be his last campaign with the Blues, and he went to city rivals Arsenal as part of a trade deal that saw Ashley Cole go the other way and the Gunners were given £5 additional millions.
Both defenders left Stamford Bridge at the end of the season and Gallas joined rivals Arsenal.
Del Horno, who was listed over Gallas in the role, was a newcomer to Stamford Bridge at the start of the 2005-06 season.
The Euskadi-born left-back would go on to make 34 appearances in all competitions, but left the club after just one season.
Valencia took him back to his native Spain to replace the retired Amedeo Carboni at the end of the season.
