Have you been making your toastie WRONG? Debate is settled once and for all

Thousands of people have only just discovered how to use a sandwich maker the ‘right way’.

A heated debate broke out after Sydney radio presenters Will and Woody from KIIS FM asked listeners a simple question.

“When the green light comes on, does that mean the sandwich is done, just like the jaffle is done, or does it just mean the plate is hot enough and ready to cook a jaffle?” Will McMahon asked.

The two discussed it among themselves, after which Woody Whitelaw asked, “How do you know when it’s done?”

A co-host pointed out that the device “isn’t smart enough to tell you when your jaffle is ready.”

Most listeners think the green light means the board has reached maximum temperature, but a woman on the radio said it means “both.”

After I shared a clip on TikTok, opinions in the comments were divided with dozens of people sharing their views.

In Australia, a ‘jaffle’ is a slang term for a toasted sandwich.

A heated debate broke out after Sydney radio presenters Will and Woody from KIIS FM asked listeners a simple question: what does the green light on a sandwich toaster mean?

According to the user manual for a Russell Hobbs sandwich press, the green light will come on when the machine has reached operating temperature. It will then cycle on and off as the thermostat maintains the temperature

“The green light has nothing to do with it being finished,” someone wrote.

“It’s just when it’s warm enough – I often leave my sandwich in there multiple times while the light goes on and off. If the sandwich is done at the same time as it turns green, that’s just a coincidence,” said another.

‘The red light only indicates power. Green light is the thermostat, meaning when the green light is ON, the plates are at full temperature and the heating element is off, meaning all food is at full temperature/cooked,’ wrote another.

Another woman said she had been wondering this all her life.

But others strongly disagreed.

“I just throw it straight in and green means it’s done? Mine has always been perfect,” said one.

“When it goes back on the heat, the sandwich has been in there long enough and is ready,” added another.

However, some admitted that they do not follow traffic rules at all.

“I don’t wait for the light to come when I say it will,” someone wrote.

“The lights are useless,” declared another.

The unit then turns on and off while the thermostat maintains the temperature.
