Wild scenes as Outback Wrangler’s friend is heckled outside court moments before he admits to destroying evidence at deadly crash site

The pilot who was first on the scene of a helicopter crash that killed a crocodile egg collector was harassed outside court.

Michael Burbridge was accompanied by his wife Jade as he endured a media frenzy outside Darwin Local Court on Thursday.

Burbridge, Matt Wright and Neil Mellon were due to appear in court over the 2022 crash that killed Chris Wilson and injured pilot Seb Robinson.

Burbridge's arrival was marked by wild scenes as a heckler pushed through the crowd of journalists to confront the pilot.

“You're a liar and a coward!” The woman said before walking away.

Burbidge, wearing a plaid shirt and jeans, declined to answer the media pack's questions.

He was charged in September 2022 with destroying evidence, conspiracy, attempting to pervert the course of justice and making a false statement.

Burbidge pleaded guilty to destroying evidence when he appeared in court more than a year later.

His other charges have been dropped and Burbridge will appear in court again on February 29.

Burbidge is the director of Remote Helicopters Australia and its chief pilot.

He appeared as one of the pilots in several episodes of Outback Wrangler.

Mr Wilson and Mr Robinson were leaving to collect crocodile eggs in West Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory on February 28, 2022, when the helicopter crashed.

Wilson, 34, dangled from a rope 30 meters below the helicopter to collect the eggs and was killed in the crash, while Mr Robinson suffered life-changing injuries to his spine.

They were part of a three-helicopter egg collection mission to remote swamps using Wright's Helibrook aircraft fleet.

The crash scene was found when the other two planes went looking for Mr Wilson and Mr Robinson after they failed to respond to radio messages.

Mr Wright immediately flew to the scene with former police officer Neil Mellon and off-duty Burbidge.

He is the director of Remote Helicopters Australia and its chief pilot and has appeared as one of the pilots in several episodes of Outback Wrangler.

Mellon also pleaded guilty Thursday to destroying evidence.

Two other charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and making false statements were dropped.

The former officer will appear in court in February on other charges.

He will also appear in court on March 1 for submissions and sentencing on the damning evidence.

Wright was determined to stand trial at the High Court next year for one of his seven charges – attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He will appear in court on January 18, where a trial date may be set.

His other charges will be listed in Darwin Local Court on June 18.

He has yet to enter a plea to any of the charges.

Wright and his wife Kaia did not let go of each other's hands as they left the court.

Neither said a word as the waiting media shouted questions at them.
